Wow! Just received my copy in the mail today and wanted to say I’m amazed at the transformation you were able to accomplish starting out with such a simple game and turning it into a masterpiece. The graphics are top notch. The music is catchy. The gameplay is challenging, but really fun. An excellent addition to anyone’s Lynx library.

Thanks, Jason, really appreciate the kind words! Glad you’re having fun with Microvaders.

Being a fan of the classic “Galaga” arcade game (more so for “Galaga 84”), this looked like a superb Lynx adaptation of it. I wasn’t disappointed. The gameplay is smooth and fun with excellent graphics and sound effects. But, there is one issue I didn’t like. Why is the ship stuck to a horizontal left-right movement instead of being free like in “Galaga”? That would have made it way more fun IMO. Nonetheless, I highly recommend this to all Lynx owners.

Actually, Galaga only allows left-right movement. 🙂 Thanks for the review, and enjoy the game!

Microvaders has quickly become one of my favorite Lynx games. An homage to fixed shmups like Galaga and Space Invaders, it’s really a fairly simple game. It’s so finely polished though, and its gameplay so perfectly tuned, that players will discover a wonderfully addictive experience. Rather than sticking with the basic gameplay of those earlier titles, Microvaders is fleshed out with powerups, bosses, story scenes, and a difficulty select. The graphics are quite impressive, my favorite details being the shading and animation on the tumbling asteroids. But you’ll notice little details throughout if you pay attention: Slightly asymmetrical features in the character portraits. The back portions of the player’s ship peeking out as you turn. Bosses changing color and losing parts as they take damage.
Modern games boast campaigns that stretch into the dozens of hours, or multiplayer modes that last indefinitely. Microvaders can be beaten in less than a half hour once you know what you’re doing. But despite that, I’ve sunk over a hundred hours into Microvaders and I still get urges to play more. THAT is the sign of excellent gameplay.
Other cool features are jukebox mode, which cycles through the various tunes from the game. And also story intermission screens, adding depth to the experience. And there’s a really cool bonus for Songbird fans if you stick with it long enough! There is also a chapter skip that allows you to fast forward to any chapter (10-level segments separated by cutscenes) you’ve previously reached.
My favorite feature is the achievements. The manual describes a couple of them, but most are left to the player to discover. And it’s so much fun trying to unlock all eight! When you earn one, its corresponding icon fades in and then back out at the bottom of the screen, and man is that satisfying! Your total collected achievements are displayed on the high score screen along with your highest level reached, making that screen even more fulfilling once you have a nice high score to show off. I can’t wait for Microvaders to feature in AtariAge’s Lynx High Score competition!
While the experience is all about the game itself, Microvaders comes with a beautiful high-quality box and manual, with really nice cover art, along with a few extra goodies depending on which version you buy.
If you like shmups or have any appreciation for retro arcade titles like Galaga, you owe it to yourself to give Microvaders a shot.

Wow, thank you for all the kind words! Very humbling. I am so grateful that Lynx fans like you appreciate Microvaders so much; it’s a game I personally still enjoy playing quite regularly. 🙂
