ULM is a periodic feature that will be posted to alt.games.lynx and

rec.games.video.atari. The purpose is to generate some interest and

discussion around the Atari Lynx portable video game system, especially

for game titles that have been "under-exposed" on the internet.

Contact songbird@atari.net for information on contributing to ULM.

Lexis was developed by Dave Dies of Shadowsoft, the same company which

brought out the fantastic ports of Robotron and Joust on the Lynx. The

game was completed but shelved back in 1994, until Songbird rescued it

and licensed the game for publication on the Lynx.

Lexis brings a new twist to the 'falling blocks' genre popularized by

the original Tetris, by making players spell words (the game contains

a 20,000+ word dictionary which can be consulted in or out of the game)

to erase the falling letters. Words can be spelled backwards or

forwards, horizontally or vertically (no diagonals).

The game definitely isn't as easy as it sounds -- sometimes you can be

working on building a long word to rack up points or to clear a screen,

only to find out you actually spelled a smaller word accidentally and

then your letters vanish prematurely. But it's a fun spin on a classic

game, and many Lynx fans have found a new favorite in Lexis.

Strategy tips:

1. Spelling long words is easier horizontally than vertically.

2. Certain words have special effects on the game. Try spelling WARP,

for obvious reasons. Words such as FOUR or FIVE will affect your

   goals for certain pages.
