Subject: Under the Lynx Microscope #2 Newsgroups: rec.games.video.atari,alt.games.lynx Summary: Keywords: <<<< Under the Lynx Microscope >>>> Edition #2, Date 07/14/97 By: Carl Forhan (forhan@millcomm.com) //////////////////////////////////////////////////////// // // // FEATURED GAMES: APB // // Blue Lightning Demo Card // // // //////////////////////////////////////////////////////// ULM is a periodic feature that will be posted to alt.games.lynx and rec.games.video.atari. The purpose is to generate some interest and discussion around the Atari Lynx portable video game system, especially for game titles that have been "under-exposed" on the internet. Contact forhan@millcomm.com for information on contributing to ULM. ____________________________ / \ | APB | \____________________________/ APB has got all the right features for a cool game: arcade-style gameplay, background music, cool sound effects, sharp graphics, and comedic interludes. This game scores high in my "pick up and play" category. Just beating one or two missions is enough to feel rewarding. And there is sufficient variety in both the objectives and the layout of the map for each mission to keep things lively. Strategy tips: 1. It sounds simple enough, but you've got to manage two resources to beat the mission: time remaining and fuel. Don't be oblivious to either. 2. You can't just run off the road and ran buildings at will. APB manages to take an arcade-styled game and force you to be a good driver to boot. 3. Get lots of practice holding down the siren button and the accelerator simultaneously. :-) ____________________________ / \ | Blue Lightning Demo Card | \____________________________/ OK, so this will be short, but the Blue Lightning Demo Card is worth mentioning because it's a collector's favorite. Don Thomas offered a slew of these dirt cheap ($3, if memory serves) during his Atari liquidation sales, and it's a pleasure to own. The story on the cart is that stores selling the Lynx were not running any demos on it, and Atari thought that it should make a game in constant play mode to attract more buyers. So they modified the existing Blue Lightning game to turn it into a non-playable cart that plays itself (i.e., it's always in attract mode). Now, you might expect this cart to be a little circuit board with a handwritten label, but instead it's a standard, curve-edged cart with a gold label with the Lynx logo, all in red lettering. You can't play this cart, but don't pass one up if you want to complete your Lynx collection. ___ ___ |echie |rivia: This card even features an official Atari Lynx part number: PA2054. ------------------------------ ________________________ / / | Carl Forhan <>< | http://www.millcomm.com/~forhan/jaguar.html | forhan@millcomm.com | http://www.millcomm.com/~forhan/vindicator.html \_______________________\
