Subject: Under the Lynx Microscope #6 Newsgroups: rec.games.video.atari,alt.games.lynx Summary: Keywords: <<<< Under the Lynx Microscope >>>> Edition #6, Date 12/12/97 By: Carl Forhan (forhan@millcomm.com) //////////////////////////////////////////////////////// // // // FEATURED GAMES: Batman Returns // // // //////////////////////////////////////////////////////// ULM is a periodic feature that will be posted to alt.games.lynx and rec.games.video.atari. The purpose is to generate some interest and discussion around the Atari Lynx portable video game system, especially for game titles that have been "under-exposed" on the internet. Contact forhan@millcomm.com for information on contributing to ULM. ____________________________ / \ | Batman Returns | \____________________________/ Batman Returns is perhaps the second-most common Lynx game, next to the pack-in California Games. This may be due to the fact that "a lot" of marketing weight was thrown behind this licensed title. I've never seen _any_ TV commercial for the Lynx, but I've heard that BR was advertised quite heavily. Well, IMHO, they picked a good title to push. BR (not to be confused with B&R, which is on the game.com and other platforms) is an outstanding title for the Lynx. It has all the ingredients to make a great game -- outstanding graphics and animation, solid control, non-annoying background music that changes periodically, plenty of enemies to battle, and a popular movie tie-in. There are only four levels to the game, but I think they're sufficiently long and challenging to keep the game engrossing. Possibly the only true flaw in the game is that there are no continues -- and single misplaced jump on the second level is a very frustrating way to end the game. BR was one of the first four titles I owned with my original Lynx package, and kept me busy for a good number of hours. I _still_ haven't passed those pesky penguins at the end of stage 3, though! Strategy Tips: 1) Conserve your Batarangs and Acid Vials as much as possible, particularly on the first level. Most enemies can be defeated with simple punches or just avoided altogether. 2) Check behind every lamppost and streetlight looking for power-ups! 3) Use Batarangs while kneeling on the ledge to take out the Penguin in his duck-mobile at the end of the first level. Learn the motion patterns to time your throws while the duck is moving downward. 4) Take out the shotgun-toting police as quickly as possible. Their shots will stop you dead in your tracks, and if you happen to be jumping over a couple of buildings at the time, I _really_ mean dead in your tracks! 5) Use Batarangs again to take out the Catwoman from a distance at the end of stage two. Beware the whip! ___ ___ |echie |rivia: Borrowed shamelessly from Portable Addiction #15 (Oct 1992): "The first 30,000 cartridges have Catwoman with red hair. Time Warner didn't like it. Catwoman does not have red hair in the movie, and her hair doesn't show that early in the movie, so they had to remove it." Which version do you have? Play a few games of BR on the Lynx, and let me know the results! ------------------------------ ________________________ / / | Carl Forhan <>< | http://www.millcomm.com/~forhan/jaguar.html | forhan@millcomm.com | http://www.millcomm.com/~forhan/vindicator.html \_______________________\
